Itinerary
Day 1 - Wednesday, October 26
Fly to Lima, Perú. Try to arrive at the Lima airport in the evening between 6:00 pm and midnight. If you need to arrive on a 4:00 am flight you might need to arrive a day earlier. We will meet you at the airport and take you by taxi to our hotel about 45 minutes away. You will need to store your bike case at the airport Left Luggage booth. The cost is about $30 per day.
Day 2 - Thursday, October 27
This is a flex day in Lima to make sure all the bikes and luggage arrived. You can sleep in at the hotel and eat breakfast there. We are staying in the Mira Flores District which has many nice stores and parks within walking distance. In the afternoon you can take an optional Lima City Tour with a guide to the historic colonial areas of the city. The tour lasts about three hours and costs $35. There are other things to do such as walking ten blocks to the ocean or going to some of the markets in the area.
Day 3 - Friday, October 28
We will go to the airport and make an early departure to Tarapoto. You will collect your bike from the Left Luggage storage area. We will arrive in Tarapoto in mid morning and go to our hotel to assemble our bikes. We can have a light lunch near the hotel. Our first bike ride is in the afternoon to the mountain town of Lamas. The ride is a 50 km loop with a 10 kilometer climb on a gravel road up to the old Spanish town. The return trip is paved and much faster to Tarapoto. The whole ride will take about four hours with stops. We can have a nice dinner together at a local restaurant that serves sample of local jungle foods. Total distance 50km.
Day 4 - Saturday, October 29
Today we go in a different direction to the town of Sauce (Sow-see). It is a 30 km ride to the ferry boat on the paved highway. After crossing on the ferry we have a 18 km climb on a gravel road up the mountain. The villegas of Sauce is a tourist area on a mountain lake. We will arrive there in time for lunch and can spend the afternoon along the lake, swimming, canoeing or visiting the local native village making handmade paper. We will spend the night in the bungalow cabins along the lake. There are several nice restaurants that prepare local meals. Total distance 48km.
Day 5 - Sunday, October 30
After breakfast we will return downhill to Tarapoto. It is an easier ride back to our hotel in the city. There is an optional alternate route in the jungle which goes on a smaller ferry across the river. We will have the afternoon free to visit Tarapoto. Our hotel has a swimming pool because it will be hot by mid afternoon. Total distance 48km.
Day 6 - Monday, October 31
We depart Tarapoto and make a long 2,000 foot elevation climb up a paved road leaving the city. We need to cross of a mountain ridge which is the dividing line between the foothills of the Andes Mountains and the start of the low jungle. The road has many hairpin turns with great views of the valley below. Along the way we will stop and visit some waterfalls and other small towns. In the afternoon descend from the mountains and we will arrive in Pongo Caymarachi which is the biggest town in this secluded area. Our hotel tonight is basic, but it is a relaxing place to stay. Total distance 55km.
Day 7 - Tuesday, November 1
Today we are in in the start of the low jungle. The paved road has many rolling climbs as our route winds toward the river town of Yurimaguas. After we arrive in Yurimaguas we will check into our hotel in the afternoon. We will have time for a jungle hike with a guide to see some tropical plants in the dense forest. Total distance 75km.
Day 8 - Wednesday, November 2
Riverboat
Depending on the riverboat loading schedule we could depart anytime between 9:00 AM and 11:00 PM. If our departure time is later we have scheduled additional jungle hikes near Yurimaguas and an extra night at our hotel. The riverboat will travel for 36 to 40 hours. We will travel on three rivers. Each river is slightly larger until we reach the Amazon River.
Day 9 - Thursday, November 3
We will be traveling all day on the riverboat and stopping at several villages to pick up bananas and unload bags of rice. We will be able to deliver school books and supplies to rural schools in the jungle.
Day 10 - Friday, November 4
Depending on the departure time of the riverboat from Yurimaguas, we will arrive at the port of Nauta in the morning. We need to get on our bikes and start riding 90 km to Iquitos. This will be our longest cycling day. The road is paved with slightly rolling hills. Iquitos is a huge city of 400,000 people. We will stop riding at the edge of the city at the Quistacocha Resort and Zoo. We will have time for lunch and swimming and visiting the zoo. In the late afternoon we will but our bikes on a truck and take a moto taxies across town to our hotel in the city. Iquitos is an busy town with lots action near our hotel. Total distance 90km.
Day 11 - Saturday, November 5
We will visit several interesting jungle areas such as the Boras Indian Village, butterfly farm and monkey island. Visiting the fish market in Belem is an interesting place to see the variety of wildlife being caught in the Amazon river everyday.
Day 12 - Sunday, November 6
Alessandra has organized a 50 kilometer bike race on the Nauta Highway. You can enter the race or view the race from a support vehicle. We will donate any extra cycling equipment we brought as prizes for the racers. These races are always popular and exciting events. A group dinner tonight will be at a special floating restaurant out in the river.
Day 13 - Monday, November 7
We will fly back to Lima in in the midmorning. This tour ends at the Lima Airport. When you are in Lima you have the option of taking a taxi and visiting downtown Lima on your own in the afternoon before you fly back home later in the evening. Most flights depart back to the United States after 9:00 pm. You need to be at the airport 3 hours before your flight. Arrive back in the United States, Tuesday, November 8.
COVID TESTING
You might need a Covid Test 24 hours before returning to the United States. There is a testing site near the Lima Airport where you can be tested in the afternoon before your evening flight home.
Tarapoto Jungle and Amazon River Tour Cost - $ 2,495
($200 discount provided if 12 or more
riders register before August 1st).
If you take a bike to donate to the Perú Cycling Projects you can leave it in Iquitos.
If you need to take your bike home we will have a cardboard bike box for you.
If you would like to stay in Iquitos for the extension tours in the jungle there are several 2-3 days options available.
