The theme of the this tour is to ride through the original region where the Spaniards and Inca Empire first collided in 1532. The team scouted a new route that includes good roads, climate and interesting history.
Beginning in the coastal city of Trujillo (300 miles north of Lima) the tour will climb up the drier slopes of the Andes Mountains and make a big loop back to Trujillo in 10 days. Average daily distance is 48 miles with 4,300 feet of climbing per day. Total distance is 435 miles with about 50 miles of occasional gravel sections. Most of the roads are excellent but bikes with 40mm tires are recommended for the gravel patches and road construction. Mountain grades are 7% to 10%. A gear range of 1 to 1 (30 tooth chainring x 30 tooth rear cog) is recommended.
To paint a better picture
Average elevations are 6,000’ to 9,000’ with a high point of 11,600’. The climate is dry and mild with the daily temperatures of 45 degrees overnight and daytime highs of 75 degrees. Hotels range from fancy to basic. Most hotels have hot water showers. Some hotels in the lower elevations do not have hot water because it is warm outside.
There are nine cycling days and then one rest day in Cajamarca where we have a historic city tour and visit to the Inca hot springs. Cajamarca is where the Spanish invader Pizarro took the Inca leader Atahaulpa prisoner in 1532 and held him for ransom until the Incas filled a large room with gold. This will be a historical tour with many archeological sites from the Inca culture.
Tentative dates are October 26 to November 8 including travel days to and from Lima, Peru. The group size is limited to about 10 riders from the United States and 6 riders from Peru. This tour is being organized by the Peruvian Women’s Team as a fund raiser for their future cycling events.
